Delta Center Annual Field Day
The Annual Delta Center Field Day will be held on August 31 at
the Lee farm east of Portageville. Tours will run from 9:00
until 2:00. The farm is located two miles south of Portageville
and five miles east at the intersection of highways T and TT.
Cotton Variety Test Field Day
It will be held on September 11, 2001 at the Lee farm east of
Portageville at 10:00 A.M. The farm is two miles south of main
intersection in Portageville and five miles east to the
intersection of highways T and TT. The leading varieties and
promising new varieties are represented in the trials. The
Roundup Ready varieties can be observed where Roundup was used.
We will meet at Rone hall on the farm and leave from there to
view the trial on clay. Then we will observe the silt loam trial
and the Roundup Ready trial. This will be followed by lunch.
Reducing the Cost of Boll Weevil Eradication
This program is based on actual cost. If we can help reduce the
cost the savings will be passed on to the participants in the
program. One way to cut cost is to cut stalks immediately behind
the cotton picker. Without any new bolls or squares remaining in
the field, it will not need to be sprayed anymore this year.
This could save two or three applications. Volunteer cotton is
in some soybean fields. These cotton plants are hosts to
weevils. Please remove these plants as soon as possible. This
will also help reduce cost of the program. The success of the
program hinges upon not allowing weevils to survive emergence
from bolls and enter into over-wintering locations. The cold
winter helped us this year. If we can prevent weevils from
over-wintering this year we can achieve eradication quicker and
cheaper than originally planned.
Bollworm Management
We are seeing outbreaks of bollworms. The Malathion used in
eradication will not control the worms so be sure to watch for
and control the worms. However, Malathion will help control
plant bugs and mosquitoes which are both plentiful this year.
Defoliation
Defoliation time is near. We have completed a study funded by
Cotton Incorporated which evaluated timing of defoliation. At
the Delta Center Field Day I will present the results of the
trial and how to use new techniques.
