Planting started earlier than normal. Much cotton was planted in April and the first week in May. The crop was doing well until the third week in May when the temperatures dropped and it rained. Seedling diseases were very severe and thrips were present in unusually high numbers. Many fields had to be treated twice for thrips. Replanting was common. We received more DD60’s than usual for the year. The crop was very poor at the end of May but responded well to the DD60’s and produced a very good crop. There were dry periods during the growing season but rains were fairly regular without being excessive. Supplemental irrigation paid well. In the fall lodging was common due to winds and a high fruit load. It caused some difficulty in applying harvest aid products. Extremely high levels of budworms were present in the latter part of the season and caused much damage to the crop. Bt was very valuable this year. Multiple rains delayed harvest and reduced crop quality. Ruts in the fields will be a problem for next year. Final lint yields were very good making it one of the best crops but also one of the most expensive crops. The insect control costs for budworms made it difficult to have a good profit even with the high lint yields.
