Weed Science Project Report

Dr. Andy Kendig, Weed Specialist, Robert Cobill, Research Associate, Britton Hinklin, Research Specialist, Paula Ezell, Senior Research Lab Technician

I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and democrats, and frothy eloquence neither impresses nor satisfies me, I am from Missouri, you have got to show me.

(Willard Duncan Vandiver, 1899)

Welcome to the ugliest plots on the Lee Farm. Some ask why our plots look so bad. When a grower asks if a herbicide works well, we need to have tested it under tough conditions to give him a good answer. Any herbicide works well when there are few weeds. We are proud of our plots and know that when farmers do ask questions, we have thoroughly-tested answers.

The Delta Center Weed Science Project strives to provide growers with the latest weed control information for Rice, Cotton, Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, and Grain Sorghum, in addition to providing support for vegetable and homeowner weed questions.

In 2004 we conducted 28 rice trials, 18 cotton trials, eight corn trials, five soybean trials, nine general weed control trials, two wheat trials and one grain sorghum trial, for a total of approximately 4,000 plots.

We are researching Palmer amaranth control and horseweed control for cotton producers and have one experiment with the new Roundup Ready Flex cotton. In rice we are researching red rice control as well as working with four new herbicides.

We also offer a weed id and herbicide symptom course one week after field day and a two-day Agronomy update meeting in early December. Also, check our website: type "MU Delta Center" into your favorite search engine or go directly to http://www.psu.missour i.edu/deltaweeds.

This years field tours will cover:

  • Herbicide Update
  • Horseweed
  • Flex Cotton
  • Scouring Rush
  • Wheat Weed Control
We would like to thank our summer workers, Blake Davis, Jim Heiser, Bree Pearson, and Eric Williams and Dr. Anthony Ohmes for speaking on the weed tour.
