Field Operations

Field Operations is a unit within the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) Agricultural Experiment Station (AES).

Field Operations has two functions. One is to act as a service unit for CAFNR. In this capacity Field Operations has a farm crew, a carpenter crew, a welder, an electrician/plumber, two mechanics and a heavy equipment unit.

The farm crew raises all the crops on the South Farm and at the Dairy Farm. These crops are in turn sold to the Division of Animal Sciences to feed the livestock they have at the South Farm and the Dairy Farm. The farm crew also does plot work for research projects, mows lawns, builds fence, and helps service and maintain all equipment. Farm crew members are located at South Farm and at the Dairy Farm.

The carpenter crew constructs new buildings and maintains existing buildings on the various farms and centers located throughout the state of Missouri. The welder assists customers in the fabrication of equipment for their research projects.

The electrician/plumber is responsible for the installation and maintenance of water lines, backflow preventers, and electric service on both South Farms and the Dairy Farm. He also installs electricity and plumbing in the new construction completed by our carpentry unit. Like the carpentry unit, the electrician/plumber may work out of town at any of the various farms and centers located throughout the state of Missouri.

The mechanics are responsible for servicing and maintaining all of the Field Operations equipment. They also service and repair the equipment of the various projects that work at South Farm. In addition to these duties they are in charge of rental vans for CAFNR and screening and obtaining federal excess property for CAFNR.

The heavy equipment unit does terrace work, builds ponds, maintains roads, constructs building pads and assists with research projects. They also may travel to any of the various farms and centers throughout the state of Missouri.

The second function of Field Operations is to serve as a point-of-contact for the various farms and centers throughout the state of Missouri. The Director of Field Operations, the engineer and the office staff of field operations serve not only the Field Operations staff, but the entire AES farms and centers. The director coordinates people, equipment, and projects to make things run more efficiently. The engineer assists the director and the office staff provides whatever assistance is needed. This includes keying payroll, maintaining UniCards, and training fiscal people at the outlaying farms and centers.
