Forage Systems Update
Vol 10, No. 4

line
Field Notes from Valerie Tate

We have initiated a winter pasture establishment/pasture renovation study at FSRC. We began with a tall fescue-clover pasture, with the intent of renovating the pasture by using a winter annual forage to aid in smothering the existing fescue stand. We used several herbicides to suppress the standing forage and then seeded plots with several winter annual forages. Use of any of these products does not reflect an endorsement of any of these products by the University of Missouri. Six herbicide treatments were used and seven seeding treatments were no-till drilled into the killed sod. Herbicide treatments included Gramoxone Extra and Roundup Ultra for total burndown of all existing vegetation. Assure II, Fusion, Poast Plus, and Select were used to kill the fescue, leaving the legumes in the stand. All herbicide treatments except Gramoxone Extra were applied on July 20, 2001 while the latter was applied July 30. All herbicide treatments included recommended adjuvant. Plots were seeded on August 3 and August 4 using a Kelley no-till drill. Herbicide application rates and seeding rates follow:

Herbicide Rate Forage Variety Seeding Rate
Assure II 10.0 oz./A Marshall annual ryegrass 25 lb/A
Fusion12.0 oz./AMO-1 annual ryegrass25 lb/A
Gramoxone Extra24.0 oz/ABarmultra Italian ryegrass25 lb/A
Poast Plus48.3 oz/ACereal rye90 lb/A
Select6.0 oz/ACereal Rye+ Marshall50 lb/A + 15 lb/A
RoundUp Extra63.3 oz./AForage oats50 lb/A

The sprayed treatments have been assessed twice; at three-week intervals to determine percent green cover, percent legume cover and percent fescue kill. These measurements are visual estimates of those parameters, and are independent of each other. Percent green cover visually estimates the ground cover by living species, as opposed to bare ground or dead thatch. Percent legume cover estimates the percentage of the ground covered with a desirable legume species. Percent of fescue kill estimates the percentage of fescue killed by the herbicide treatment. Percent cover by seeded species was visually estimated on September 20, independent of the two previous observations. Preliminary results from these measurements follow.
