Field Notes from Valerie Tate

In the October newsletter I shared some information about the stand evaluation and herbicide effectiveness in the winter pasture establishment/pasture renovation project. We have since harvested the plots to determine forage yield.

To recap, we began with a tall fescue-clover pasture, with the intent of renovating the pasture by using a winter annual forage to aid in smothering the existing fescue stand. Six herbicide treatments were used and seven seeding treatments were no-till drilled into the killed sod. The herbicide treatments included Gramoxone Extra and Roundup Ultra for total burndown of all existing vegetation. Assure II, Fusion, Poast Plus, and Select were used to kill the fescue, leaving the legumes in the stand. (The use of these products does not reflect an endorsement of these products by the University of Missouri.) All herbicide treatments except Gramoxone Extra were applied on July 20, 2001, while the latter was applied July 30. The plots were seeded on August 3 and 4 with the following treatments: Marshall annual ryegrass, MO-1 annual ryegrass, Barmultra Italian ryegrass, Cereal rye, Cereal rye plus Marshall annual ryegrass, Forage oats, and Cereal oats.

The plots were harvested on October 29 and 30 and again December 3, 2001. The grass suppression was minimal with the selective herbicides, initially 18% to 60%, and those plots contain a high percentage of tall fescue when harvested. In order to effectively compare the winter feed contributions of the winter annual forages, only the forage yields from the burndown herbicides are reported below.
