Grass Seed Head Suppression with Clethodim (Select) Herbicide

During the spring of 2002 the Forage Systems Research Center conducted a grass seed head suppression demonstration. Keep in mind that this was only a demonstration and not a replicated study; therefore this is a report of the effect seen on one site, one year, not a scientific based recommendation. Trials have been conducted at other sites across the state with similar results.

Clethodim herbicide was applied as the fescue began to green up during the spring. The table below lists the date and rate of herbicide application and the percent of green fescue that was present at the time of application. The site was then monitored through the spring for seed head emergence. The table below lists the percent of the stand with seed heads present at the date listed (Table 1). Forage samples were harvested on June 06, 2002 to determine yield and forage quality (Table 2).
