Forage Systems Update
Vol 12, No. 2
Field Notes from Valerie Tate
Signs of spring are starting to emerge. Pastures are beginning to
show signs of green up and the alfalfa plots are coming to life. We
are watching for signs of life other than plant life in the alfalfa.
Once temperatures start to warm up we will begin scouting weekly for
alfalfa weevil. Scouting is done by carefully collecting 50 alfalfa
stems and placing them top down in a 5 gallon bucket, shaking the
weevils off the stems into the bucket and counting the number of
weevils. If 30% of the stem show feeding damage and there is an
average of one larva per stem for alfalfa under 16 inches tall or 2
larva per stem for alfalfa over 16 inches tall, treatment is needed.
