Field Notes from Valerie Tate

We have started a new study addressing the utilization of stockpiled tall fescue for fall calving beef cows. Twice weekly we give the 12 groups of cow/calf pairs a fresh allocation of forage.

Using portable electric fence in the winter has presented a few challenges, but not insurmountable obstacles. Our portable electric fence consists of a reel of poly wire and step in posts about 45 feet apart. I prefer the poly wire to poly tape this time of year, with freezing rain and wind, the poly tape tends to go down more easily, resulting in a shorted out fence. We also have some pigtail posts which don't go in the frozen ground as easily as the step-in post with a three inch spike. The other morning the temperature was one degree at 8:00 am, getting the pigtail posts in the ground was not easy. The guys were able to use a hammer to get the posts in the ground. I favored the cordless drill. Most days it takes about 15 minutes to move a group of cattle, setting up one fence about 350 feet long and taking down another. Strip grazing the forage is an excellent way to improve the utilization of stockpiled tall fescue, reduce winter feed costs, and stretch the forage supply.
