Forage Systems Update
Vol 15, No. 1
Field Notes from Valerie Tate
Our most active research project this time of year involves grazing fall calving cows on stockpile tall fescue. Temporary fence, including step in posts and reels of polywire, is used to provide cows with fresh pasture twice a week. Cows are allocated feed based on their body weight; the treatments include 2.25%, 3.00%, 3.75%, and 4.50% of body weight. The cows are weighed and the pastures are harvested every 21 days to determine the amount of forage available, so the adjustments can be made as the season progresses.
Another project getting underway includes harvesting tall fescue plants every month throughout the year to determine the accumulative level of endophyte infection in the plants over the course of a year. The plot area was trimmed in December and harvest will begin this month. Each month we will collect plants from a new site within the plot area and the level of endophyte will be measured. An additional set of plots will be harvested monthly during the growing season to determine how the level changes every month as the plant regrows.
