Vol 16, No. 2
Field Notes from Valerie Tate
The Noble Foundation is a private agricultural research organization
located in Oklahoma. They recently contacted Dr. Robert Kallenbach in
search of tall fescue plants that were infected with "wild" endophyte.
They are planning to investigate the endophyte fungus which infects
tall fescue plants to determine if there are different strains of the
fungus, or if all of the naturally occurring endophytes are the same.
When cattle consume tall fescue infected with high levels of the
endophyte fungus, the effects can be quite detrimental. The fungus
causes blood vessels to constrict, resulting in poor circulation, and
this can lead to rough hair coats, lost tail switches and even lost
hooves.
Plants were sent from pastures at FSRC and the Southwest Center in
Mount Vernon, Missouri, to the Noble Foundation in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Both University of Missouri locations have observed the negative
effects of the endophyte fungus. There the plants will be potted and
maintained in a green house and tests will be conducted. We look
forward to learning more about the endophyte in these plants.
