Field Notes from Valerie Tate

Often when producers visit FSRC they are interested in seeing a side by side comparison of a variety of forage species. They would like to see this comparison in order to identify differences in growth habit, leaf morphology, and flower morphology that will help them identify the forage species on their own farms. As a result, we are in the planning stages of seeding a forage garden. We will establish many of the forage species this fall and the remainder will be sown next spring. At this time we are planning to include ten commonly grown cool season grasses, seven warm season grasses, two annual grasses, and eleven legume species. We plan to seed a ten foot square block of each species. Half of the area will be maintained during the growing season in a vegetative state by clipping (to simulate a managed rotational grazing system), while the other half will be allowed to mature and set seed. We look forward to providing this demonstration as a tool for producers.
