Field Notes from Valerie Tate

Potato leafhoppers are small light green, triangular shaped insects that feed on alfalfa during the summer. Typical damage from the potato leafhopper includes wedge shaped yellowing of the tips of the leaves. Damage is more prevalent in dry years. Because they are only 1/2 inch long and the move quickly, they can be difficult to see in the field. Using a sweep net to scout is the best way to determine if treatment is needed. We have seen potato leafhoppers reach threshold levels at FSRC this spring. We did not treat the stand because the alfalfa was ready to harvest, we will monitor the regrowth.

For more information about scouting and treating for potato leafhoppers see the June 30, 2006 edition of the Integrated Pest Management newsletter at: www.ipm.missouri.edu/ipcm/archives/v16n12/ipmltr4.htm
