Field Notes from Valerie Tate

A grass variety trial was established on September 13, 2002. Entries included twelve orchardgrass, nine perennial ryegrass, one reed canarygrass, one smooth bromegrass, twelve tall fescue, and one timothy cultivar. Grasses were sown into a prepared seedbed with a press-wheel plot seeder, and there were three replications of each variety. Plots were harvested using a flail type mechanical harvester. A 14' x 3' strip from the center of each plot was harvested for yield determination. A subsample of harvested material was dried to determine dry matter yield of each plot. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at a rate of 200 pounds of N/ac/yr with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer applications based on the removal of nutrients by the harvested forage. Chemical control of broadleaf weeds was applied as needed.
