GROUNDBREAKING AT HUNDLEY-WHALEY RESEARCH FARM

A groundbreaking ceremony was held December 7th at the Hundley-Whaley Farm in Albany for the Learning Discovery Center. Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond was the honored guest for the event. Senator Bond was responsible for a $250,000 HUD grant for developing a telecommunications resource center within the facility. The Learning Discovery Center is an eighty-one hundred square foot facility to be used for housing University Outreach and Extension and CAFNR research staff and will provide facilities for meetings on-site and distance learning.

Steve Alexander represented the Missouri Soybean Association and Terry Ecker represented the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council in the groundbreaking ceremonies. They were joined by US Senator, Kit Bond; College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Dean, Tom Payne; Hundley-Whaley Planning Committee Chairman, Alan Schneider; Mo. 12th District Senator, Sam Graves; Missouri 4th District Representative, Dan Hegeman ; Gentry County Presiding Commissioner, Marshal Pile; Missouri Secretary of Agriculture, John Saunders; Messick Charitable Trust Representative, Tim Kelly and Ewell Lawson representing Governor Mel Carnahan's office.

The Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council and the United Soybean Board have provided $10,000 toward the center. The Missouri State Legislature provided $250,000 in the spring of 1998 and the Messick Charitable Trust has committed $100,000 toward the construction of the Center. Construction of the shell of the facility should begin early in 2000. Another $500,000 will need to be raised before the Center is ready for public use.
