Broadstrike + Dual Weed Control in Soybeans

by Donald E. Null, Regional Agronomy Specialist
University Outreach and Extension, NW Region

Situation: Soil applied Broadstrike + Dual provides broad spectrum control of many common grass and broadleaf weeds in soybeans. Information on tank mixing it and other broadleaf control herbicides needed to be obtained.

Objective: To determine if tank mixing other soybean herbicides with Broadstrike + Dual would allow a rate reduction in Broadstrike + Dual while maintaining efficacy.

Methods: The soybeans in this study were planted in wide rows on May 19 into a conventionally tilled test area. Pre-emergence treatments were applied right after planting.

Ratings were made on July 8. Weed pressure in the plot area was lighter than anticipated. Giant foxtail was rated heavy in all untreated check plots but sunflower and velvetleaf were only rated moderate in pressure. Cocklebur pressure was light to moderate.

The treatments were replicated three times.

Results: The results of the treatments can be seen in the table below. Waterhemp pressure in these plots was light and all treatments provided good control of the weed. None of the treatments showed adverse crop response. The only treatments providing 100% control of morningglory were treatments containing Canopy XL. Broadstrike + Dual alone provided 45% morningglory control.

We took yields from these treatments, even though the number of replications was too few for best data retrieval. The untreated check plot yielded 21.6 bu/acre, a sign that the weed pressure was not terribly high.
