Weed Control in Roundup Ready Field Corn

by Donald E. Null, Regional Agronomy Specialist
University Outreach and Extension, NW Region

Objective: To compare weed control provided by Roundup on Roundup Ready corn to conventional weed control treatments and to assess various weed control programs using Roundup.

Methods: DeKalb DK EXP363RR was planted into a conventionally prepared seedbed on May 19. Pre-emergence applications were made on May 19 following planting. Post applications were made on June 4 to 2-4" weeds; on June 17 to 12-18" tall corn; and/or on June 19 to weeds that had regrown to 2-4" after the June 4 applications. Plots were harvested on October 3.

The treatments were replicated three times.

Weed pressure in the plot area was moderate to heavy and consisted of giant foxtail, sunflower, cocklebur, velvetleaf and common waterhemp.

Results: Figure 15 below illustrates the weed control from two of the Roundup treatments compared to two standards. The first standard, a pre-emergence Bicep II @4.9 pt/acre, provided acceptable control of all weeds except cocklebur. The Basis Gold @0.87 lbs/acre treatment was applied on June 4, and it performed very well in this study. The Roundup @1 qt/acre treatment applied on June 4 provided excellent initial weed control but the lack of residual allowed new flushes of cocklebur and common waterhemp to re-establish. The "two-shot" Roundup application of Roundup consisted of a June 4 Roundup @2 pt/acre and a June 19 Roundup @1.5 pint/acre. It provided the best overall weed control in the study (97%). It also provided the highest corn yield in the study. Corn yields for the four treatments were statistically insignificant. Actual yields for the treatments were 168 bu/acre for the Bicep II; 184 bu/acre for the Basis Gold; 165 bu/acre for the single Roundup; and 186 bu/acre for the "two-shot" Roundup treatment.

No adverse crop response was apparent from any treatment.
