Soybean Weed Control with Liberty

by Donald E. Null, Regional Agronomy Specialist
University Outreach and Extension, NW Region

Objective: To determine the weed control in Liberty Link soybeans provided by Liberty and Liberty tank mixes.

Methods: Asgrow 2704LL soybeans were planted May 20. The soil was conventionally tilled prior to planting. Row width was 10".

The study consisted of six treatments and an untreated check. One standard treatment of Pursuit + Status was not applied correctly (no additives used) and the resulting weed control from that treatment will not be reported. Early post treatments were made on June 5 to V1 soybeans and 1-2" tall weeds. Mid post treatments were made June 12 to V3 soybeans and 1-6" tall weeds. One treatment called for a second treatment to regrowth weeds and it was made on June 25 to V5 soybeans and 1/4 to 8" tall weeds. Weed pressure could be characterized as heavy and consisted of giant foxtail, sunflower, morningglory, velvetleaf, waterhemp and volunteer corn.

All Liberty containing treatments contained 3 pounds/acre of spray grade ammonium sulfate.

Results: The soybean stand was less than desired in this study. Estimated stand on June 10 was 50,000 plants per acre.

Treatments were evaluated throughout the summer. The pre-emergence Scepter treatment provided good control of all weeds except velvetleaf and common waterhemp early in the season. Scepter did not provide full control of giant foxtail but did reduce its pressure and suppressed its growth. Authority provided good control of common waterhemp and morningglory and suppressed sunflower, giant foxtail and velvetleaf growth early in the season.

The results of the July 29 evaluation can be seen in the table below.
