Although the Southwest Center is primarily an agricultural research facility, education
and outreach are also important parts of our overall mission. The Center attracts more than
8,000 visitors annually, many of whom come for the many varied workshops, field days and
other events throughout the year

Top left:
FFA students have been attending workshops to help prepare them for State contests for
many years. Originally consisting or only soils and crops sections, additional workshops
have included entomology, farm management, dairy judging, floriculture, nursery, and
forestry. Here, students evaluate dairy foods, one of the most popular categories in recent
years. Attendance has grown from several hundred students in the 1980’s and 1990’s to over
900 students in 2004.

Bottom right:
Participants at a recent grazing school learn the “art and science” of pasture management.
Graziers are taught how to estimate forage quality and yield, as well as how to “read manure
piles.” The Southwest Center has been conducting yearly grazing schools since 1992, and
has been an important part of the regional grazing schools that were implemented state-wide
in 1996.
