Tree Grafting Workshop - Tuesday, May 6, 1:00-3:00 pm

Tree grafting is an art and science. Some tree species, such as apples, are quite easy to graft while others, such as black walnuts, can frustrate even experienced grafters.

Grafting is usually the best way to propagate named varieties of trees, and to share favorite varieties with friends. While anyone can learn to graft, it does take a basic understanding of tree bark and cambium anatomy, along with lots of patience, practice, and the willingness to give it a try.

Anyone interested in learning to graft trees is welcome to attend this 2-hour workshop hosted by Dr. Bill Reid of Kansas State University, and Andrew Thomas of the MU Southwest Center. Bring along a sharp grafting knife or small flat-bladed knife, and some sample branches of trees you’d like to graft.

Call the Center at 417- 466-2148 with questions or for directions. It is not necessary to RSVP, but if you are interested in learning to graft a particular species, please let us know in advance. Otherwise we will likely focus on apples, pecans, and black walnuts.
