2008 Grazing Schools Offer New Location in Barry County

The Southwest Region will offer a total of seven management-intensive Grazing (MiG) Schools for the 2008 season, including a new location in Cassville, MO in Barry County. Additional schools will also be offered in other regions around the state.

The brainchild of Jim Gerrish, Ron Morrow and Maurice Davis, the grazing schools were originally conducted only at the Forage Systems Research Center (FSRC) near Linneus, MO. Because of the popularity of the program and the great demand in the southwest part of the state where a large number of livestock operations are located, a school was added at the SW Center beginning in 1991.

By 1995, the program was expanded statewide and today numerous schools are conducted annually in nine regions in Missouri plus the original schools at FSRC. To date, literally thousands of individuals have attended the schools to learn about the basic principles and practices of MiG. These schools have also helped livestock producers qualify for thousands of dollars in various cost-share programs. Check with your local NRCS or FSA office for more details.

The Southwest Grazing School Regional covers 15 counties, and the planning committee does its best to offer schools at a variety of locations and dates throughout the grazing season. While the standard format involves a 3-day program, schools involving evenings and Saturdays are also provided for those who may have off-farm jobs during the week.

The following is a list of schools by date; location and contact info is also provided:
