Southwest Center RUMINATIONS
July - September, 2009
Vol. 15, No. 2
From the Superintendent...
by Richard Crawford
If you think it has been a while since you've seen a new Ruminations newsletter, you are correct. The last issue (Jan-Mar, 2009) was sent out in February. With busy schedules and tight budgets, I have waited until now, about a month before Field Day, to send this newsletter. Thank you for your patience.
I started Ruminations in 1995, not long after being appointed superintendent of the SW Center, as a way of informing friends and supporters about the various research and outreach activities at the Center as well as local events of interest. I hope you have found the information of use and interest over the years. The number of subscribers to our newsletter has grown from a handful to as many as 1,200.
It is with true regret then that I have to tell you that this will be the last printed and mailed issue of Ruminations. We will continue to produce Ruminations as an e-newsletter in the future.
In the previous issue I encouraged our readers to cancel their hard copy/snail mail subscriptions and begin accessing the electronic version at our website. Over 100 of you did just that, and I thank you for your support in helping to reduce costs! Unfortunately, budgets continue to be very tight, and while $1,600 might not seem like much to mail out 1,000 copies or more 4 times a year, it is an expense that we can no longer afford.
I hope that you will not feel estranged by this move. Many other newsletters have already switched to electronic only subscriptions, and the SW Center must now join that growing list.
If you are among the estimated 1 in 5 households that does not have internet access, there are places where you might be able to pull up our newsletter on-line. Many public and university libraries have computers that patrons can use. Also, all of the county Extension offices and many of the USDA-NRCS and SWCD facilities in the region access our newsletter on-line.
