2000 Alfalfa Variety Trial Results

Robert Kallenbach, Dan England, Matt Massie, and Greg Bishop-Hurley
University of Missouri - Department of Agronomy and Southwest Research & Education Center

Growing Conditions Statewide for 2000

Statewide, alfalfa yields in 2000 were above average, although a late summer drought meant that a fifth cutting was not possible in southern Missouri. There was little winter-kill during 1999-2000 because winter temperatures were moderate. Alfalfa weevil populations were about average and potato leafhopper damage was a problem again. Potato leafhoppers yellowed and severely stunted an estimated 250,000 acres of alfalfa in Missouri this year. In addition, there were several reports of blister beetles, aphids, and web worms causing damage. The incidence of disease was normal this year.

Southwest Center Trial

Twenty alfalfa cultivars were originally planted on September 28, 1998. The soil type is a Huntington silt loam. Plots were fertilized with 0-100-400 on May 2, 2000. Individual plots are 5 ft. by 20 ft. The trial is not irrigated.

Plots were harvested at the first flower to one-tenth-bloom stage (approximately every 30 days) during the growing season. There were only four harvests this year due to a late season drought. Forage yields were taken from a 2.67-ft. x 20-ft. strip in each plot using a flail type mower. Sub-samples from each plot were analyzed for moisture content. The experimental design is a randomized complete block with four replications.
