Tips for PIs

To make the grant proposal process go more smoothly, keep the following in mind —

Just a reminder …… please allow ample time for review in submitting grant proposals.

In order for a standard proposal to be fully reviewed, please have the completed proposal, including the signed Proposal Signature Routing Sheet, to Martha Jones five working days prior to the grant deadline and/or postmark submission date.

This will allow us to meet the two-day deadline for Office of Sponsored Program Administration.

There have been several changes lately in rates for fringe benefits, tuition and graduate student insurance. These things need to be considered and incorporated in grant proposal budgets. Fall is a busy season for grant seekers and we want to make sure we build the right amount of funding into the budgets. The following quick tips are provided for your reference:
Graduate Resident Education Fees:
2003-2004 $236.60 per credit hour
2004-2005 $243.70 per credit hour
2005-2006 $251.01 per credit hour
Estimate an increase of 3% per year for future years. Typically we budget for 22 credit hours per student, per year.

Graduate Student Medical Insurance (If the granting agency will allow this cost it must be requested in the budget. This is considered a fringe benefit.)
2003-2004
25% FTE (12 months) $ 609
50% FTE (12 months) $1218
Estimate a 10% increase per year for future years.

Fringe Benefits:
Personnel employed >75% FTE 27.65%
Personnel employed <75% FTE 7.65%
Graduate Students We include tuition and GRA insurance as a fringe benefit – there is no % of the stipend charged
Undergraduate Students Exempt – no % charged
