| Beckman Foundation provides support for young researchers
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation’s Young Investigator (BYI) Program provides research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Projects should show promise for contributing to significant advances in the research fields of interest to the foundation. They should represent innovative departures in research rather than extensions or expansions of existing programs. Proposed research that cuts across traditional boundaries of scientific disciplines is encouraged.
The BYI program is open to persons with tenure-track appointments. Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States at the time of application. To be eligible, an applicant should not have completed more than three full years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent research appointment.
Letters of intent should be limited to a two-page summary that makes clear the rationale for the proposed work, its potential importance, the approach to be taken, progress to date and the potential significant outcomes.
- Campus deadline for letter of intent: 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 10, 2007. Submit letters to the Office of Research.
- External proposal deadline: Sept. 28, 2007, 5 p.m. PST.
- Amount: $300,000 total award over a period of a maximum of four years.

Molecular imaging for diagnosis and treatment of cancer focus of National Cancer Institute program
The National Cancer Institute’s In Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Centers program seeks to accelerate the progress in molecular imaging as the basis for the extraordinary, non-invasive and quantitative analytical tools useful in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer as well as in the laboratory environment to interrogate biological pathways relevant to cancer.
The Cancer Imaging Program of the NCI solicits new or competing applications for P50 Research Center Grants for In Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Centers (ICMICs). The program will fund the 5-year P50 ICMIC grants to support interdisciplinary scientific teams conducting cutting-edge cancer molecular imaging research with clinical relevance.
ICMIC funding is designed to:
- Support unique core facilities
- Enable the awardees to initiate pilot research in new promising directions
- Provide interdisciplinary career development opportunities for investigators new to the field of molecular cancer imaging
The P50 funding mechanism and the intended ICMIC structure promote integration of resources and expertise to facilitate synergistic and creative scientific interactions, while allowing each center to define research objectives that would maximize individual unique scientific strengths of each research team. Collectively, the formation of multidisciplinary ICMICs is expected to stimulate cancer imaging research and streamline the implementation of the imaging technologies in patient care.
Because MU is limited to one application for this program, letters of intent must be submitted to the Office of Research no later than 4 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2007. Letters of intent should be limited to three pages and should summarized plans for:
- Research components
- Specialized resource facilities and/or services
- Pilot projects
- Career development opportunities
Campus deadline for letter of intent: 4 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2007
External proposal deadline: Non-required letters of intent are due July 16, 2007. Application receipt date is August 16, 2007.
Amount: Up to$2,000,000 per year for up to 5 years
