Wurdack Farm Field Day
Cook Station, MO
October 2, 2009
Begins at 11:30 a.m.
COOK STATION, Mo.- This year's Wurdack Farm field day, Oct. 2, will include a demonstration of a portable sawmill as well as talks on forage, timber management and agroforestry.
"Our field days are known for providing information that can be taken home and put to work on your farm. This year won't be any different," said John Poehlmann, superintendent of the 1,200-acre University of Missouri research farm in Crawford County.
The field day begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and brief introductory remarks, followed by wagon tours of research and demonstration projects on the farm.
MU Extension beef nutritionist Justin Sexten will talk on a study evaluating pasture supplementation of fall-born calves using distillers grains fed either on the ground or in a bunk in a managed-grazing system. "I will present an economic simulation of purchasing bunks compared to ground feeding and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each system," he said.
Brent Carpenter, research associate for the MU Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute, will give a talk titled "Aftershocks in the Grain Market," which will address factors that have heavily influenced feed costs.
The challenges of managing a mixture of warm-season and cool-season grasses is the topic of MU Extension forage specialist Rob Kallenbach's presentation, "Adding Bermudagrass to a Tall Fescue System."
MU Extension entomologist Wayne Bailey will present details of his two-year study of native fescues and how they perform in terms of yield and insect problems. Bailey also will discuss armyworm infestations in southern Missouri.
On the timber/agroforestry tour, MU Center for Agroforestry research specialist Dusty Walter will demonstrate the portable sawmill and give updates on a five-year silvopasture study of thinning timber stands, explaining recent findings on how light penetration in the stands influences both timber and forage growth.
MU forestry graduate student Stacey Smith will discuss a long-term project to replant a dry, south-sloping area of the farm, replacing ill-suited oak, hickory and ash with pines to be planted this fall.
The event is free and open to the public.
