Wurdack Farm

Fall Field Day

Friday October 5, 2007 11:30 - 4:30 PM
at the farm near Cook Station

October 5 Wurdack Field Day Plans include a special celebration

The annual University of Missouri Wurdack Field Day will begin with a lunch near the spring at 11:30 on October 5th. After lunch, special recognition will be given to a group of people who supported the construction of a new $600,000 facility on the Wurdack Farm to support education, research and community involvement.

After the ceremony Nadia Navarette-Tindall will describe some of the Native Species of plants that have been mapped on the 1,200 acre Wurdack Farm. A major draw for those attending the field day are the wagon tours of the farm that will begin at 1:30 and repeat around 2:45 p.m. upon returning to the shelter house by the spring. Two tours will be offered.

The Timber and Agroforestry Tour will host an update by Dusty Walter from the Agroforestry Program at MU on Silvopasture Research Developments and Results showing research plots in the Wurdack Farm timber that have been thinned to encourage higher quality timber and allow forage production. Dr. John Dwyer will be showing an area of the farm where tree species are not suited and explain a research project to select superior tree stock for planting in the same area. This project was funded in part by the Hugo Wurdack Endowment Fund. Dr. Hank Stelzer will discuss Forestry Carbon Credits as an emerging program for timber owners who can capitalize on timber development prior to harvest.

Dr. Bob Weaber will discuss Relationships between beef cattle temperament and production traits on the Forage Beef Tour, showing data that often ties flighty cattle with poorer performance. Dr. Justin Sexten will describe cow herd supplementation related to different forage qualities using co-products with forage testing and also discuss alternate day feeding. On the forage side of the tour, Dr. Wayne Bailey will be explaining research at Wurdack Farm on native fescue varieties, their performance and interactions with insects. Dr. Robert Kallenbach will provide information about how to allocate stockpiled tall fescue to fall-calving beef cows, using new and informative data on that topic collected last year.

The lunch, program and tours are open to public and free. Visitors have a history of asking questions about what is viewed during the tours and share information.
