Many Cattle Need Extra Feed

Many of our cattle and particularly spring calving cows need more feed. University Extension Livestock Specialist Gary Applegate says, "As I drive around the area, I've been surprised at how thin many cows are. We have a lot of cows that are in a body condition score of three or four which is pretty serious at this time of year." Most of the cows on pasture are spring calving cows that are well into their second or third stage of pregnancy. Applegate says, "Average quality hay and even a couple of pounds of supplemental grain will not meet these cows nutritional needs as winter sets in." Ted Fry, University Extension Agronomist, adds that " Most pastures, because of our lack of rain this past summer and fall, are not providing much winter forage. Some producers have been furnishing hay to their animals since July. The supply of better quality hay is decreasing." Many of the thinner spring calving cows could go down either prior to or at calving or they may have weak or even dead calves. Those cows that pull through will likely rebreed very late if at all.

Many of the problems can be avoided if producers take measures to get ample energy and protein into their thin cows. Applegate says, " I know that many people are opposed to feeding cows in late pregnancy because in their view ' it all goes to the calf.' But, research really doesn't support this view. When feeding is done within reason there is very little reason for concern. The benefits far outweigh the risks."

The following are some "cookbook" rations that could be used depending upon how much weight gain is needed. These are sample rations to allow an 1100 pound cow to gain approximately 1/2 pound per day (above normal calf growth) during average dry winter days. Adverse weather, mud, wet hair and other stress will greatly increase a cows nutrient requirements. For a ration specifically designed for your cowherd, please call Gary at (573)422-3359.
